The Archenkanzel is a natural rock platform at 1,346 metres on the northeastern flank of the Watzmann massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. On clear days, the wooden benches here look out over roughly two-thirds of the Königssee, its surface lying some 743 vertical metres below — one of the most dramatic drop-views in the region. The ascent follows marked mountain hiking trails and requires sure-footedness; the terrain is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Outside peak season the platform is often deserted, leaving the deep-green lake filling the valley below in near silence.
