Breithorn

The Breithorn is a 2,504-metre summit at the southern edge of the Steinernes Meer, a vast limestone karst plateau straddling the Austrian-Bavarian border in the Pinzgau district south of Zell am See. The plateau is one of the largest high-altitude karst landscapes in the Alps, its rocky, treeless expanse giving the area a distinctly remote character. The ascent to the Breithorn involves genuine alpine terrain — dwarf pine zones, scree fields and rocky ridgelines — requiring solid mountain fitness and appropriate gear. From the summit, views extend across the Salzach valley, the High Tauern range to the south, and the Bavarian foothills to the north. No summit hut is documented nearby, so the route should be planned accordingly.
