Brienzer Rothorn

The Brienzer Rothorn (2,350 m) stands as a commanding summit above Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, offering an unobstructed 360-degree panorama stretching from the Jungfrau massif to the Titlis and Pilatus on clear days. Since 1892, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (BRB) has linked the lakeshore to the summit — a narrow-gauge rack railway that climbs roughly 1,700 metres over 8 km entirely under steam power, using locomotives that date back to the turn of the 20th century. It is one of the last fully steam-operated rack railways in Europe and a living example of late-19th-century Swiss engineering. At the summit, a mountain restaurant, ridge hiking trails, and high-alpine meadows thick with seasonal wildflowers complete the experience, making the Rothorn one of the most rewarding day trips from the Interlaken region.
