Braunau am Inn

Braunau am Inn is a medieval border town in Upper Austria, situated on the Inn river opposite the Bavarian town of Simbach am Inn. Its largely intact old town features a late-Gothic tower gate and the compact street pattern of a historic market settlement founded around 810. The town is internationally known primarily as the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, born here in 1889 at the Gasthof zum Pommer; he lived in Braunau only for his first three years, but the connection has shaped the town's global identity ever since. A memorial stone marks the former birth house on Salzburger Vorstadt — a site that has sparked ongoing debate in Austria about how to handle the building's legacy. Beyond its fraught historical footnote, the town is a stop on the popular Inn cycling route and a regional administrative center.
