The Arco da Rua Augusta is the landmark of Lisbon's Baixa Pombalina — a 19th-century triumphal arch forming the northern edge of Praca do Comercio and marking the entrance to Rua Augusta. Planned after the great 1755 earthquake as part of the Pombaline reconstruction, it was only completed in 1873. Allegorical figures of Glory, Valour, and Genius crown the arch; the interior offers an observation platform with panoramic views over the square and the Tagus.
