Artus Court

The Artus Court on Gdańsk's Long Market is one of the finest surviving examples of Hanseatic civic architecture in the Baltic region, originally built in 1481 as a meeting place for the city's merchant brotherhoods and patrician guilds. For centuries it served as an exclusive assembly hall where Danzig's commercial elite conducted deals, held banquets, and displayed their wealth through elaborate interior furnishings — a role comparable to similar Artus courts once found across Hanseatic cities. The building was heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently reconstructed, with its distinctive late-Gothic facade and Renaissance detailing carefully restored. It now operates as a museum of Gdańsk's civic history, anchoring the city's showpiece Long Market alongside the Neptune Fountain.
