Goethe-Haus

On the Großer Hirschgraben in central Frankfurt stands the reconstructed birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, where the poet was born in 1749 and spent his formative years. The Frankfurter Baroque patrician house was almost entirely destroyed in Allied bombing raids in 1944; its postwar reconstruction — carried out from detailed inventory lists, historical paintings, and eyewitness accounts — was at the time a contentious exercise in architectural recreation. The Theaterzimmer on the first floor is especially evocative: here Goethe's father Johann Caspar kept a puppet theatre that captivated the young Johann Wolfgang and planted an early fascination with the stage. Four floors of period furnishings offer an unusually intimate picture of 18th-century bourgeois life in Frankfurt, while the attached Freies Deutsches Hochstift houses one of Germany's most important Goethe archives, preserving manuscripts, letters, and first editions.
