Arundel Castle

Arundel Castle, set above the small West Sussex town of Arundel, is one of Britain's best-preserved medieval fortresses and has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk for centuries. Founded around 1067 in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest, it was completed by Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, and bears the classic hallmarks of early Norman military architecture — keep, gatehouse, drawbridge and crenellated walls. The castle suffered serious damage during the English Civil War, and the sweeping neo-Gothic restoration carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries gave it much of its current dramatic silhouette. Today visitors walk through the ducal apartments, a medieval chapel, and manicured formal gardens that descend the hillside beneath the walls. The tower offers panoramic views across the Arun Valley toward the South Downs.
