Bramber Castle

Bramber Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification dating to around 1070, built in West Sussex as one of the string of strongholds William the Conqueror raised to control southern England after the Conquest. Constructed from local flint, the castle once commanded the Adur valley; today only a slender fragment of the gatehouse tower survives upright on the earthen mound. Listed as a Grade I structure, the site is freely accessible and the elevated motte offers open views across the surrounding Weald countryside. The sparse remains set against quiet pastureland give the ruin a distinctly contemplative quality that draws walkers following the Adur valley path.
