Austråttborgen

Austråttborgen sits on the Ørland peninsula at the mouth of the Trondheimfjord and ranks among Norway's most storied medieval manor sites. For centuries it served as the power base of dominant chieftain clans in Trøndelag; the current Renaissance-style structure was largely shaped by the Rømer family in the 17th century. The estate is also notable for a World War II coastal gun battery installed by German occupying forces, whose remains still stand on the grounds. Open to visitors as a museum, the site layers medieval lordship, Renaissance architecture, and wartime history at a windswept fjord headland.
