Château de Clisson

Château de Clisson, located in the small Breton town of Clisson southeast of Nantes, was the ancestral seat of the House of Clisson, one of the most powerful noble dynasties in 14th-century Brittany. Its most prominent lord, Olivier de Clisson — Constable of France under King Charles VI — significantly expanded the fortress in the late 1300s, making it a major strategic stronghold during the turbulent Hundred Years' War era. After the family's main line died out, the castle passed through several hands and gradually fell into ruin. Today it is classified as a historic monument and open to visitors, its surviving circuit of walls and towers offering an evocative encounter with medieval military architecture in the heart of Breton countryside.
