Bab Jedid

Bab Jedid — Arabic for "New Gate" — is one of the surviving city gates of the historic Medina of Tunis, situated in the southwestern section of the old city walls. The Medina of Tunis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and ranks among the best-preserved Islamic old towns in North Africa. Like many of the Medina's gates, Bab Jedid lent its name to the surrounding neighborhood, reflecting the centuries-long role of city gates as social anchors and navigational landmarks. Today the area retains a lived-in, everyday character somewhat removed from the more heavily visited parts of the Medina, offering a quieter entry point into the old city fabric.
