Porta Lame

Porta Lame is a surviving city gate at the western edge of Bologna's historic center, standing at the far end of Via Lame where it meets Via Zanardi. Built in 1677 as part of the city's outer medieval fortification system, it is now protected as an Italian national monument. The site carries particular resonance from World War II: on 7 November 1944, partisans of the Italian Resistance fought one of northern Italy's most significant urban battles here, pushing back German forces. Today the gate stands quietly at a busy intersection — unremarkable at first glance, but layered with civic and wartime memory for those who know its history.
