Badacsony

Badacsony is a striking volcanic mesa rising 437 metres above the northern shore of Lake Balaton, its flat basalt-capped summit clearly visible from across the water. The mountain's basalt columns formed around five million years ago through lava flows, and today they are a textbook example of volcanic geology in Central Europe. The same mineral-rich volcanic soils that shape the landscape also define a renowned Hungarian wine region — varieties like Olaszrizling and Szürkebarát thrive on the sun-drenched slopes. Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit plateau, where the panorama stretches across the full breadth of Balaton. The hillside is dotted with small family wineries offering tastings, making sunset from the terraces one of the area's signature experiences.
