Assmannshausen

Assmannshausen is a village of just under 1,000 residents on the eastern bank of the Rhine, administratively part of Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau-Taunus district. Its defining quirk is red wine: while the Rheingau is almost exclusively Riesling country, the steep slate slopes around Assmannshausen have produced Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) for centuries, making it a pilgrimage destination for German red wine enthusiasts. The village is part of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley and sits amid the classic Rhine landscape of terraced vineyards and rocky hillsides. Hiking trails climb from the riverbank into the vineyards, and the Rhine cycle path runs directly along the waterfront.
