Rossio railway station

Rossio station opened in 1890 as a terminus sandwiched between the Rossio square and the Praça dos Restauradores in central Lisbon. Its facade is a showpiece of neo-Manueline style — a 19th-century romantic revival of Portugal's ornate 16th-century Late Gothic — featuring distinctive horseshoe arches and dense stone ornamentation that deliberately evoke the age of Portuguese maritime expansion. The two-storey entrance hall inside reveals cast-iron construction typical of the Gründerzeit era. Functionally, the station serves as Lisbon's main commuter gateway to Sintra, with CP Urbanos de Lisboa trains departing every 15 minutes — making it the starting point for one of the region's most popular day trips. The facade is best admired from the Praça dos Restauradores, particularly in the evening light.
