Skopje Train Station

Skopje's central train station serves as the main rail terminal for the North Macedonian capital — and as an unintentional monument frozen in time. On 26 July 1963 at 05:17 a.m., a magnitude 6.1 earthquake levelled much of the city, killing over 1,000 people. The station's clock tower stopped at the precise moment of impact and has never been restarted, preserving the time as a permanent memorial to the disaster. The current building, a socialist-era reconstruction raised from the rubble with international aid coordinated by the UN, now also houses an earthquake museum documenting the destruction and the city's rebuilding. For travellers it remains the functional hub for domestic and international rail connections.
