Yūbari Station

Yūbari Station on the northern island of Hokkaido opened in 1892 during the Meiji era, serving as the terminus for a region once at the heart of Japan's coal-mining industry. At its peak, Yūbari city housed over 100,000 residents; as the mines closed through the latter half of the 20th century, the population collapsed to a few thousand, and the city became a national symbol of Japan's rural depopulation crisis. By 2019, the Hokkaido Railway Company shut the line permanently, citing passenger numbers among the lowest in the country. The station building now stands as a quiet remnant — a tangible endpoint of an industrial era, of interest to railway historians and those drawn to Japan's shrinking-city phenomenon.
