Shimizusawa Station

Shimizusawa Station was a small rural stop on Hokkaido's Sorachi subprefecture, in continuous operation from 1897 until its closure in 2019 — a lifespan of over 122 years. It opened during the Meiji era as part of Japan's rapid northern railway expansion, when Hokkaido was being systematically developed for coal mining and agriculture. The surrounding Yūbari region was once the heart of Japan's coal industry; as the mines closed and the population collapsed, so too did demand for local rail services, ultimately sealing the station's fate. Today it stands as a quiet remnant of a vanished industrial era on Japan's northernmost island.
