Bahnstrecke Frose–Quedlinburg

The Frose–Quedlinburg railway, colloquially known as the „Balkan", was a standard-gauge branch line running along the northern edge of the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. It connected Frose with Quedlinburg via Gernrode, serving as a modest regional route until its closure in 2004. Its afterlife is notable: the Gernrode–Quedlinburg section was converted to metre gauge and reopened on 26 June 2006 as part of the Selketalbahn narrow-gauge network — a rare case of a standard-gauge corridor being reborn under a different rail system. The disused western section from Frose now traces a quiet corridor through the open Harz foothills.
