Bankalar Caddesi

Bankalar Caddesi — literally 'Banks Street' — runs through the Galata quarter of Beyoğlu in Istanbul and served as the financial spine of the late Ottoman and early Republican city from the mid-19th century into the 1960s. European and Levantine banking houses lined its short stretch, including the Ottoman Central Bank and the Banque de Salonique, housed in confident neoclassical and late-historicist buildings that signaled Istanbul's integration into international capital markets. When the financial district migrated northward to Levent and Şişli in postwar decades, the grand bank palaces lost their original purpose. Today several have been repurposed as cultural institutions, and the street's restored facades remain a legible record of the city's cosmopolitan commercial past.
