Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria

The Cathedral of Anagni, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Lord and holding the rank of a minor basilica, is one of Lazio's finest Romanesque churches. Construction began in 1001 on a hilltop in the medieval town of Anagni, a former papal seat and the site of the notorious 'Slap of Anagni' in 1303, when agents of Philip IV of France seized Pope Boniface VIII in a dramatic confrontation that shook medieval Christendom. The cathedral's most celebrated space is the crypt of Saint Magnus, its floor covered in intricate 13th-century Cosmatesque mosaics — among the best-preserved examples of this Roman inlay tradition in central Italy. The building serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Anagni-Alatri and is open daily, with afternoon hours varying by season.
