Basilica dell'Addolorata
The Basilica of San Pietro e Addolorata in Acqui Terme, Piedmont, is one of the oldest church foundations in the region, with roots reaching back to early Christian worship. Rebuilt by the Lombards in the 7th century and again in the 11th century, it served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Acqui until 1067. The nave and the Romanesque bell tower survive from that medieval phase, making them among the rarer intact traces of Lombard ecclesiastical architecture in northern Italy. Extensive 18th-century modifications reshaped the interior in a baroque manner, layering over much of the medieval fabric. Today it holds the rank of basilica minor — historically significant as a former cathedral seat, though relatively little-visited.
