Basilique Saint-Sernin

The Basilica of Saint-Sernin is the largest surviving Romanesque church in France and a cornerstone of the UNESCO-listed pilgrimage routes of Santiago de Compostela. It was built over the tomb of Saturninus, Toulouse's first bishop, who died a martyr around 250 AD — tradition holds he was dragged through the city tied to a bull after refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods. Construction began in the late 11th century, producing a rare architectural hybrid of nave hall, tribune gallery, and basilica form, crowned by a five-story octagonal crossing tower that still dominates the Toulouse skyline. The crypt below houses relics of over 120 saints, which made the church one of the most significant stopovers on the medieval pilgrimage road from Arles to Santiago de Compostela — a route it has been part of since UNESCO recognition in 1998. The pilgrimage function remains live: walkers on the Via Tolosana still pass through its doors today.
