Bayard's Cove Fort

Bayard's Cove Fort is a compact Tudor artillery blockhouse on the bank of the River Dart in Dartmouth, Devon, and one of England's better-preserved early sixteenth-century coastal defences. It was built in 1510 at the initiative of the Dartmouth Corporation — a guild of local merchants — to protect the harbour mouth against seaborne raids from the English Channel. The low, curved parapet punctuated by surviving gunports illustrates the architectural shift from medieval castle design toward purpose-built artillery platforms. Designated a Grade I listed building, it sits at the end of Bayard's Cove quay and can be reached on foot along the riverside path, offering quiet views across the Dart toward the wooded hills of Kingswear.
