Berry Pomeroy Castle

Berry Pomeroy Castle is a ruined fortification near Totnes in Devon, built on a Norman foundation and expanded from 1496 into a Tudor mansion by the Seymour family. Abandoned in the late 17th century, it was left to decay into the atmospheric shell visible today, nestled inside a densely wooded ravine that amplifies its isolation. The castle holds a strong reputation as one of England's most haunted sites, with local legends describing two resident ghosts — the White Lady and the Blue Lady — said to be rivals from the castle's medieval past. Visitors today pick their way through the surviving gatehouse and curtain walls along woodland paths, the combination of crumbling Tudor stonework, encroaching forest, and enduring ghost lore making it one of the more distinctive ruins in the English West Country.
