Affeton Castle

Affeton Castle is not a castle in the conventional sense but a late-medieval gatehouse dating to 1494, tucked near the village of East Worlington in Devon beside the Little Dart River valley. It was once the entrance to a fortified manor house that was destroyed during the English Civil War in the 1640s, after which the gatehouse itself fell into disrepair by the early 19th century. Sir George Stucley, 1st Baronet, had it restored in 1868–1869 and repurposed it as a shooting range — an unusual second life for a medieval structure. By 1956 it had been converted into a private residence for Dennis Stucley, 5th Baronet. The compact footprint of just 18 × 6.7 metres belies the layered history compressed within its walls, and it carries a Grade II* listing recognising its architectural and historical significance.
