Beer Quarry Caves

Beer Quarry Caves are a network of former underground limestone workings near the coastal village of Beer in Devon, England. The soft limestone extracted here — known as Beer Stone — has been quarried since Roman times and was used as a building material in structures including Exeter Cathedral and several London churches. Underground extraction likely began in earnest during the medieval period and continued until the 20th century, leaving behind passages that preserve tool marks and working methods largely intact. Guided tours take visitors through the cool, year-round constant-temperature tunnels, explaining the quarrymen's techniques. The caves also serve as an important winter roost for several bat species.
