Prüfening Abbey

Founded in 1119 as a Benedictine abbey, Prüfening Abbey sits in the Regensburg district of Prüfening and is among the rare Romanesque monastic complexes in Bavaria to have preserved much of its medieval interior intact. The abbey church contains original Romanesque frescoes of exceptional quality — a survival that is nearly unmatched in the wider region. The site also holds the Prüfeninger Weiheinschrift, a 12th-century dedicatory inscription considered a singular document of medieval typography, alongside the early-Gothic tomb of Abbot Erminold. Following secularization in the early 19th century the monastery buildings were repurposed as Schloss Prüfening, the name they still carry today. The complex is listed as a protected Baudenkmal under Bavarian heritage law, and its quiet grounds offer an understated encounter with Romanesque monastic culture far from the main tourist circuit.
