Burtscheid Abbey

Also known as: Zisterzienserinnenkloster Aachen Burtscheid

Burtscheid was an independent Imperial Abbey and thus a sovereign territory of the Holy Roman Empire. Founded as a Benedictine monastery in 997, run by Cistercian nuns from 1220 onwards. Secularised in 1802 and incorporated into present-day Aachen.
