Kornelimuenster Abbey was founded in 814 by the reformer Benedict of Aniane and endowed in 875 by Pope Cornelius with his relics. For 988 years - until secularisation in 1802 - it was one of the most influential Imperial Abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire in the Aachen region.
