Beni Hasan

Beni Hasan is an ancient Egyptian necropolis on the east bank of the Nile, roughly 20 kilometres south of al-Minya in Middle Egypt. The site is best known for approximately 39 rock-cut tombs dating to the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BC), constructed for the nomarchs — provincial governors — of the 16th Upper Egyptian nome. Their interiors preserve some of the finest painted tomb scenes from that era: wrestling matches, hunting expeditions, and detailed depictions of daily provincial life that rarely survive elsewhere. The columned porticos fronting several tombs have long intrigued architectural historians as possible early precursors to the classical Doric order. The cliff terrace commands a sweeping view across the narrow green ribbon of the Nile valley and the desert beyond.
