Château de Ramstein

Château de Ramstein is a ruined medieval hilltop castle perched at 384 metres in the Vosges mountains above the Alsatian village of Scherwiller in Bas-Rhin. Built in 1293 on a rocky spur, it sits barely 300 metres from the neighbouring Château d'Ortenbourg — an unusually close pairing that points to the strategic importance of controlling the Alsatian wine route and mountain passes below. The site is classified as a French historic monument, though it remains largely unexcavated and off the main tourist circuit. Forest trails connect the ruin to the surrounding Vosges hiking network, and the remaining walls afford open views across the Rhine plain toward the Black Forest. Visitors can expect solitude, crumbling masonry, and a distinctly untouched atmosphere.
