Haapsalu Castle

Haapsalu Castle is a medieval bishop's castle and cathedral complex in western Estonia, founded in the 13th century as the administrative and spiritual centre of the Diocese of Ösel-Wiek. Its largely intact curtain wall encloses one of the few surviving Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals in the Baltic region. The castle is equally famous for the legend of the White Lady — a ghost said to appear once a year in the choir window of the cathedral ruin, an event celebrated with an annual summer festival. The complex now houses the municipal museum of Haapsalu and Lääne County, with a surrounding castle park offering a quiet setting among the ancient stonework.
