Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial is the nation's central monument to its fallen servicemen and women, combining a shrine, archive, and military history museum under one Art Deco dome. Designed in 1925 and opened in 1941 — during the very war it would eventually have to commemorate — it anchors the northern end of ANZAC Parade, a formal ceremonial axis aligned directly with Parliament House, making sacrifice and state power literally face each other across the lake. Gallipoli and the ANZAC legend form the emotional core of the institution, but galleries span every conflict from the Boer War to Afghanistan. Visitors move through vast halls of aircraft, artillery, and naval craft alongside deeply personal letters and photographs; the Roll of Honour lining the colonnaded courtyard bears the name of every Australian killed in war, and a perpetual flame burns at the Pool of Reflection.
