Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge

The Bollman Truss Bridge in Savage, Maryland is the sole surviving example of the Bollman truss, an iron railway bridge design pioneered by engineer Wendel Bollman for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad during the 1850s and 1860s. Built in 1869 from wrought iron, it spans the Little Patuxent River and represents a pivotal chapter in American railroad expansion. The American Society of Civil Engineers recognized its singular importance by designating it the very first entry on its list of National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it draws engineers, historians, and industrial-heritage enthusiasts to an otherwise quiet Maryland mill town.
