Brahehus

Brahehus is the ruin of a baroque manor house perched on a hillside above Lake Vättern, a few kilometres north of Huskvarna. It was commissioned around 1650 by Per Brahe the Younger, one of the most powerful Swedish nobles of the 17th century and twice Governor-General of Finland, intended as a grand summer residence. The building fell into ruin early in the 18th century, not long after Brahe's death, and was never restored. Its sandstone outer walls survive largely intact, framing an open panorama across Lake Vättern — one of Europe's largest lakes. Listed as a protected ancient monument by the Swedish state, the ruin rewards the short forest walk required to reach it with striking views and an atmosphere of quiet decay.
