Reifferscheid Castle

The ruins of Reifferscheid Castle stand at 450 metres above sea level in the far south of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the German-Belgian border in the municipality of Hellenthal. The name almost certainly derives from an early medieval clearing — documented forms such as 'Rifersceith' point to a 'woodland portion of Rifhari', a plot of land cleared and held by a man of that name. Positioned between the Eifel and the Ardennes, the castle held strategic value as a border fortification for centuries before falling into ruin. Today the surviving masonry offers a quiet elevated viewpoint set in dense forest, easily combined with hiking trails along the Belgian frontier. It sees little tourist traffic, making it an unassuming stop for walkers and ruin enthusiasts rather than a signposted attraction.
