Carillon in Berlin-Tiergarten

The Carillon in the Grosser Tiergarten is a free-standing 42-metre bell tower south-east of the Kongresshalle, given to Berlin in 1987 for the city's 750th anniversary. With 68 bronze bells totalling about 48 tonnes, it is among the largest concert carillons in the world. The tower stands roughly on the site of the Kroll Opera, blown up in 1951, where the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act in 1933 - a deliberately chosen place of memory. From May to September the Berlin carilloneur gives live concerts at the keyboard beneath the bells on Sundays at 3pm. Visitors can listen from unusually close range to Bach chorales and contemporary works played open-air under the Tiergarten canopy.
