Federal Chancellery

The Bundeskanzleramt is the office of Germany's federal chancellor and part of the post-1990 government quarter in Berlin's Spreebogen bend. Designed by Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank, the white cube-like building with its distinctive round windows opened in 2001 under Gerhard Schroeder and is, at around 36 metres, roughly eight times the size of the White House. Berliners have nicknamed it everything from Federal Washing Machine to Elephant Toilet, in response to its unusual form. Behind the main building, the Chancellor's garden runs down to the Spree. The interior is only open on rare open days, but the courtyard with Eduardo Chillida's sculpture Berlin can be seen from the adjacent Spreebogenpark.
