Casa Museo Jorge Eliécer Gaitán

The Casa Museo Jorge Eliécer Gaitán is the former home of Colombian liberal politician Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, who was assassinated on April 9, 1948, just steps from his front door. His killing immediately triggered the Bogotazo — several days of violent uprisings that devastated central Bogotá and are widely seen as the opening chapter of Colombia's decades-long civil conflict known as La Violencia. Operated by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the museum preserves Gaitán's personal library, clothing, and political papers, including items from the day of his death. The date of his assassination, April 9, remains a national day of memory in Colombia. The house sits in central Bogotá and is open to visitors during regular museum hours.
