Château du Warthenberg

Burg Warthenberg is the ruin of an Alsatian hilltop castle founded in 1158, perched on a forested ridge about one kilometre west of Ernolsheim-lès-Saverne in the Bas-Rhin département. Classified as a French historical monument, it ranks among the better-preserved medieval fortifications of northern Alsace. The site is reached by foot via forest trails through the Vosges foothills, rewarding visitors with open views across the Alsatian plain. With no visitor infrastructure on-site, the ruin retains a genuinely quiet, overgrown atmosphere — crumbling curtain walls and reclaimed courtyards rather than a curated heritage experience.
