Khojaly Massacre Memorial in Berlin

The Khojaly Memorial stands in the reading garden of the Gottfried Benn Library in Berlin's Zehlendorf district and commemorates the victims of the February 1992 Khojaly massacre during the Nagorno-Karabakh war. It was installed in 2011 on the initiative of the Azerbaijani embassy; the sculptors are Azerbaijanis Akif Asgarov, Ali Ibadullayev, Ibrahim Ahrari and Salhab Mammadov. A dark stone stele shows a woman with raised arm sheltering a child in her lap, the inscription giving the date and the death toll. The monument has drawn criticism in Berlin for offering a one-sided memory of a contested conflict, but it is freely accessible; the reading garden opens daily from sunrise to sunset.
