D'r Joep

D'r Joep is a miners' memorial statue in Herzogenrath, commemorating the coal-mining heritage of the Aachen basin. The name is the local Ripuarian dialect form of Josef — a common miner's name across the former Wurm coalfield. The modest sculpture stands as a quiet tribute to the generations of miners whose labour shaped Herzogenrath until the last pits closed.
