Laub- und Auenwaldgebiet bei Herzogenrath westlich Pannesheide im Amstelbachtal

This nature reserve (NSG ACK-023) protects a stretch of deciduous and riparian floodplain forest along the Amstelbach stream, west of Pannesheide near Herzogenrath. The valley retains characteristic wet-woodland vegetation — alder and ash stands — tucked between the urban fringe and the open agricultural landscape of the Aachen region. The area is an official NRW nature protection zone and doubles as a route corridor for regional cycling and hiking, including a roughly 23 km loop featured in the Aachen Cycling Summer series via Berensberg and Richterich. Several trail sections are unpaved and rocky, making the terrain better suited to mountain bikers and experienced hikers than casual strollers.
