Monument to the soldiers of the 1st Polish Army

A bronze monument in the Muranow district of Warsaw dedicated to the soldiers of the First Polish Army who fell on the Eastern Front from 1944 to 1945. The figure group, completed in 1963 by Xawery Dunikowski and Stanislaw Sikora, shows four soldiers advancing. The First Polish Army was raised in the Soviet Union in 1944 and fought under Soviet command all the way to Berlin, taking part in the capture of the German capital. During the People's Republic of Poland the monument was a central symbol of official remembrance. After 1989 it lost political weight but stayed in place. Today it is a quiet stop for walkers in Muranow, the post-war housing district built over the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto.
