German Archaeological Institute at Athens

The Athens department of the German Archaeological Institute was founded in 1872 and ranks among the oldest and largest of the 17 foreign archaeological institutes operating in Greece. It oversees excavations at Olympia, the Kerameikos and on Samos, and runs one of the world's largest specialist libraries on antiquity, with more than 80,000 volumes. The institute sits on Fidiou Street in the Kolonaki district of Athens and serves as a scholarly hub of German-Greek classical studies. Its library and lecture series are open to external researchers by appointment.
