Dipylon

The Dipylon was the largest and most important city gate of ancient Athens, set at the north-western edge of the Kerameikos. Built in the 4th century BC, the double gate had two courtyards and four towers and counted as the largest gate in the Greek world. The annual Panathenaic procession started here on its way up to the Acropolis, and the state funerals for fallen Athenian citizens took place at this spot, with grave stelai lining the road towards Eleusis. Today the Dipylon lies exposed inside the Kerameikos archaeological site between Acropolis metro and the Gazi district, with foundation walls, tower remains and a quiet park around them.
