Eridanos

The Eridanos is a small stream in Athens that flowed from Mount Lycabettus through Kerameikos and on into the Ilissos. In antiquity it marked the northern edge of the city and crossed the Kerameikos cemetery, where a short open stretch can still be seen today. Even in classical times it was little more than a trickle; later it was built over for most of its length and now runs underground beneath Monastiraki Square and the Monastiraki metro station, where travellers can glimpse the channel through a glass panel.
