Cologne Central Mosque

The DITIB Central Mosque in Cologne-Ehrenfeld has been Germany's largest mosque and the headquarters of the Turkish-Islamic umbrella organisation DITIB since 2017. Cologne architect Paul Boehm, son of Pritzker laureate Gottfried Boehm, designed the building with a 35-metre glass-fissured dome and two 55-metre minarets. Already during construction from 2009 onward the project triggered loud public debate over minaret height, symbolism and how visible Muslim life should be in the cityscape. Today the mosque sits directly on the Inner Ring road with its courtyard, bazaar and teaching rooms. Looking through the open main portal you see a bright, modern prayer hall seating more than 1,000 worshippers.
